CELLS, TISSUES, ORGANS AND ORGAN SYSTEMS

Multicellular organisms are organised into least complex to most complex parts.

Cells

  • Tissues
  • Organs
  • Organ systems
  • Organism

They are building blocks of life like bricks of building. Bricks combine to form walls, walls combine to form rooms which further combine to form one floor and floors combine to form building.
In similar way, cells combine to form tissues, tissues combine to form organs which further combine to form organic systems and organ system combine to form organism.

Tissues

Cells combine to form tissues, such as muscle tissue in animals. A living tissue is made from a group of cells having similar structure and function and they all work together to do a particular job. Some examples of tissues are :

  • Muscle
  • Intestinal lining
  • Lining of the lungs
  • Xylem

Organs

Organ is group of different tissues that all work together to do a particular job. Some examples of organs are :

  • Heart
  • Lung
  • Stomach
  • Brain
  • Leaf
  • Root

Organ systems

Organ system is a group of different organs that all work together to do a particular job. Some examples of organ systems are :

  • Circulatory system
  • Respiratory system
  • Digestive system
  • Nervous system
  • Reproductive system
