Sodium Chlorine Reaction

Chlorine is a deadly gas and sodium is a semi explosive metal even then we put them together as sodium chloride which is table salt.

Everyday people are using products that are made from minerals such as sodium chloride.

Chlorine is a deadly gas and sodium is a semi explosive metal even then we put them together because when we put them together it becomes sodium chloride and not remain as sodium metal and chlorine gas that has sodium and chloride ions. Sodium and chlorine are highly reactive, thus are dangerous as they can gain or lose electrons and form ions. But when sodium and chlorine combine they form stable electron configurations and thus are unreactive.

Mineral such as halite (NaCl) salt we add to our food but halite’s physical properties so different from the physical properties of the individual elements. Element type is dictated by properties of its nucleus which means number of protons. But chemical properties are not explained by the nucleus. It can be dictated by electrons around it. Sodium is highly reactive and thus dangerous. But due to its property to react and accept electron it forms compound.
