Class 6 science chapter 12 question answers

Today I am sharing class 6 Science Chapter 12 question answer. Light, Shadows and Reflection. Hope it helps!

Table of Contents

Very short answer questions:

1. Name three luminuous objects.

ANSWER: The sun, firefly and burning candle

2. Name three opaque materials.

ANSWER: Wood, brick and wall

3. What is the colour of the shadow formed if the colour of the object is blue?

ANSWER: The colour of the shadow is always dark (black) reagrdlessof the colour of the object or the colour of the light used to make the shadow.

Short answer questions:

1. What is meant by translucent material?

ANSWER: The materials that allow only some light to pass through them are called as translucent materials. For example: butter paper and the tissue paper.

2. What is lateral inversion?

ANSWER: The left-right reversal of the ‘object’ and its ‘mirror image’ is called as lateral inversion.

3. Mention the two factors in which the size of a shadow depends.

ANSWER: The size of the shadow depends on:

– the distance between the object and the screen.

– the distance between the object and source of light.

4. How do we get moonlight when the moon is a non-luminuous object?

ANSWER: We get moonlight when the moon is non-luminuous object (do not emit light of its own) because moon reflects sunlight into our eyes.

5. What happens to the shadow formed on a screen when

(a) the distance between source of light and the object increases and

ANSWER: The distance between source of light and object increases then size of the shadow on screen decreases.

(b) the distance between object and the screen decreases?

ANSWER: The distance between object and the screen decreases then size of the shadow on screen decreases.

6. We can see through a glass?

(a) How can we see through a glass?

ANSWER: We can see through a glass because it is transparent object that allows light to pass through them.

(b) In our daily activities, what value can we learn from this property of glass?

ANSWER: We should not be a liar and hide ourselves from other. we should not have two faces.

Long Answer Questions:

1. (a) How is a shadow formed?

ANSWER: Shadow is a dark patch which is made when light is obstructed by an opaque object. Conditions essential for the formation of shadow:

– a source of light

– an opaque object to obstruct the path of the light.

– an opaque screen behind the object.

As we know light travels in a straight line and when light is obstructed by an opaque object. Then shade or dark space appears behind the opaque object. This shade is called as shadow.

(b) What are the characteristics of shadow?

ANSWER:  The characterstics of shadow are-

  • The shadow is always dark ragaredless of the colour of the opaque object or the colour of the light that forms the object.
  • The shadow only shows the dark outline of the object. It do not shows the details of the object.
  • the size of the shadow varies depending on the distance between the object and the source of light or the distance between screen and the opaque object.
  • shape and size of the object also varies with the position of the source of light . For eg. in noon the shadow is smallest bacause the source of light ( sun) is overhead.
  • it is formed in the direction opposite to the source of light.

2. Differentiate between an image and a shadow

3. What is meant by reflection of light? What type of objects reflect more light?

ANSWER: The process of sending back the light rays that fall on the surface of an object is called reflection of light. Shiny objects ans weel-polished objects like mirror reflects more light than dull surfaces.

Hots (Higher order thinking skills) questions:

1. Juhi was sitting in her drawing room enjoying the activities of the squirrels in her garden. The doors and the windows of the room were closed. Can you tell the material from which the door is made of ?

ANSWER: The door is made of transparent material as it allows light to pass through them due to which Juhi can see the activities of squirrels clearly in her garden through the door and windows even the room is closed.

2. Can we always recognise the object by observing its shadow? Explain giving an example.

ANSWER: No, we cannot recognise the object by observing it shadow because shadow only shows the dark outline of an object and not the details of the object. Shadow is always dark regardless of the colour of the object.

3. Can you see your image in the water of your swimming pool? How?

ANSWER: We can see the our image in the water of our swimming pool as surface of water reflects the light. The process of sending back the light rays that fall on the surface of an object is called reflection of light.

4. Why does the image of the red rose look red whereas its shadow is black?

ANSWER: Image of red rose look red as image shows the details of the object. Shadow only shows the dark outline of an object and not the details of the object. Shadow is always dark regardless of the colour of the object.

5. Can shadow of an astronaut form on moon? Why/Why not?

ANSWER: Yes, astronaut can form shadow on moon. The moon reflects the sunlight and when astronaut gets between sun and screen (any object or moon) then astronaut casts the shadow. But if there is no screen behind the astronaut then astronaut cannot cast shadow in the space. Shadow is defined as shade that blocks the light of an object.

Application Based Question:

1. Mehak wants to perform a shadow in her classroom. What are requirements for her show?

ANSWER: Requirements for her show are:

– a source of light
