In this process, the cells release high-energy compounds into the environment, such as ATP. Anaerobic respiration takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.

3. Energy yield

Both forms of respiration use glucose as the starting molecule. In aerobic respiration, glucose is broken down into two ATPs and lactic acid. The difference between anaerobic and aerobic respiration is essentially the amount of energy they produce. Both types are important for cellular functioning.

High energy yield in aerobic respiration (36-38 ATP). Low energy yield in anaerobic respiration(2ATP).

4. Combustion

Both types of respiration use the same starting molecule glucose. Complete combustion in aerobic respiration. Glucose breaks down or complete oxidation in aerobic respiration and results into carbon dioxide and water.

Incomplete combustion of glucose in anaerobic respiration and products are ethyl alcohol, carbon dioxide, and energy.

5. Aerobic respiration equation

The energy released in aerobic respiration is more than anaerobic respiration.

Glucose + Oxygen → Energy + Carbon dioxide + Water.

Anaerobic respiration equation

The equation is: glucose + enzymes = carbon dioxide + ethanol / lactic acid.
